CalArts History of Art
The way (I think) it oughta be:
(what am I illustrating?)
What I try to achieve when I am out with a camera I seldom achieve as well as here
• Picture is actually blurred from camera movement
• Correct framing required a severe crop
• Getting the white flowers to show up as I saw them required careful editing
• Peak colour was for a small duration during a long sunset and I only had about four sheets to expose
My ideal for art would be things like the above. Things that come through limitations of skill and equipment. Things that defy the odds. Things whose genesis is ultimately beyond the artist's direct control (one of the very powerful things about good portraiture, incidentally). Things that are focussed and settled but nevertheless hit hard.
The way (they think) it oughta be:
(what am I illustrating?)
No disrespect to a justifyably famous painting. However, people are after a brand. They are after the tried and trusted. No one wants to look a fool by liking the wrong thing. Give them a name everyone has heard of. Give them an image everyone already knows is good.
